Volunteers and Consultants

The loyal folks on this page have been with us for several years or more, some seasonally, and some year-round.

Consulting veterinarian Judith Herman, DVM, operates the Animal Wellness Center located in Augusta. Although Dr. Herman does not see companion birds in her practice, in her work with Avian Haven she has been a skillful surgeon and expert homeopathic consultant.

Laura Suomi-Lecker has been a seasonal volunteer at Avian Haven since 2007. In 2015, she became Avian Haven's Outreach Manager, and currently gives programs about our work at various locations statewide. Laura also directs Somerset Soil and Water Conservation District's Agricultural Allies Program, which is dedicated toward conserving grassland breeding habitats for species such as Bobolinks.

Jane Brackett joined Avian Haven in the fall of 2013, after her son Ian had completed a summer internship and returned to college. She has rapidly made herself indispensable, particularly in helping to care for the large number of winter car-hit owls.

Susan Stone signed on as a volunteer transporter early in 2015, and before long we'd invited her to join our volunteer crew. She's adept at onsite care as well as offsite rescues, and has a special fondness for owls.

A volunteer from earlier years, Marilyn McLelland returned to Avian Haven in 2014 after a sabbatical during which other pursuits occupied her time. Skillful with thread and needle as well as with feeding syringe and forceps, she's repaired or re-made most of our raptor nets.

Amy Dillon has been with us for what seems like forever, though it's really only been since 2004! Amy teaches during the school year, and returns each summer to help with the season's nestlings.

Janet Wiseley is another long-time, faithful volunteer, having joined us in 2005. Although Janet is mostly seasonal, due to flexibility in her other commitments, her "summers" here are typically 5-6 months long!

Christie Banow has been with us since 2015. Her experience as a landscaper came in handy, when she took over management of the flower and shrub beds on our campus. Her beautiful "Welcome Garden" is the first thing people see when walking from the dooryard down to the office entrance. When it comes to bird care, Christie particularly likes raptors!
